Private Golf Clubs; How much does the average private golf club cost to join?

Some of my friends belong to private golf clubs and I have become interested in them. Is the price of membership worth the benefits you receive from belonging to a private club? A friend of mind told me that in addition to his dues he also has to spend a certain amount on food and dining each year (approx 10k). I know that private clubs have a reputation as being very selective about who they allow into the clubs. What has been your experience with private golf clubs?

I don’t have any experience with private clubs in the sense of belonging to one. I’ve played at a number of private clubs and it really depends on the location of the club. I know a club in the area I live in that it costs 150 bucks a month for dues(not sure of the initial membership fee). I do know that there are different membership categories that can reduce the amount of your fee. I live in a town of 130,000 people. I’ve seen membership fees at clubs from 35,000 to over 600,000 bucks. I can tell you that 600,000 dollar fee was at a club in the Hamptons. Membership can be included in a residential purchase within the club community. Yes they have a reputation for being selective about membership(most will say membership is by invitation). Most make social and business contacts at these clubs so they will say it’s worth the investment.

What putter is Luke Donald using?

I know it’s a custom putter made only for him so there is no way to get it…but I’m trying to pinpoint the closest alternative. The model is an Odyssey White Hot XG…but his is heavier, a different finish, and a firmer insert. Does anyone know how heavy? Also, the XG is smaller than the current White Ice isn’t it? So is he using the smaller or larger version? I guess what I’m asking in general is what would be the closest alternative to his putter?

Exactly what you said, an Odyssey White Hot XG. Don’t try to get one exactly like his just because he puts so well with it.

The biggest problem that many people have is that they think if they get the exact club that pros use, it will instantly help their game. Try out as many putters as you can and see which one feels the best for YOU not for Luke Donald.

How do you pronounce the company name BERES?

The Japanese golf company Honma are also known as Beres. They are possibly the finest (At least one of the most expensive) golf clubs around. I am thinking of buying a set, but how ignorant am I that I want some that I don’t know exactly how the name should be said.
So is Beres said like Berrez?
Or Beers? (Like Here)
Or Bear? (Like There)
I honestly don’t know.

It is pronounced "ベレス (be-re-su)."
I think its pronunciation sounds like "Berrez," though the last consonant sounds "su."
As this word comes from Spanish, it is usually written in Katakana as a borrowed word,
not in Hiragana.
